Heart Health

The Women’s Heart Health Program combines the renowned cardiac services of North Shore-LIJ Health System with a focus on the unique health care needs of women to provide the very best in women’s cardiovascular care.

Our integrated approach means that our patients benefit from the expertise of a diverse group of specialists, as well as the most advanced technology for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart conditions in women. We work closely with your primary care physician, including your internist and obstetrician/gynecologist, to coordinate your care.

February is American Heart Month, when you are encouraged to learn about your risk for heart disease and stay “heart healthy” for yourself and your loved ones.  Most know that heart disease remains the leading cause of death for women and men, but many are not aware what steps to take for prevention of heart disease.

Your initial visit to the Women’s Heart Health Program begins with an assessment of your individual risk factors, based on guidelines that are unique for women. We will ask about your previous medical history, family history, symptoms you may be concerned about and lifestyle patterns that could impact your health. Read more about heart disease detection here.

One of our skilled cardiologists will perform a comprehensive cardiac evaluation, which includes appropriate diagnostic testing. Your doctor will work closely with a cardiac nurse practitioner to develop a customized plan for your heart health, highlighting education, lifestyle modification and evidence-based guidelines.

Get Started

Behavioral Cardiology – We treat behavioral issues that often accompany heart disease, such as anxiety, depression, anger, cognitive impairment and substance abuse. We also assist you in adhering to treatments, adjusting to life following a cardiac event, as well as balancing work and personal issues to minimize stress.

Heart Disease and Pregnancy – Cardiac problems may develop because
of changes to the heart and blood vessels during pregnancy. Women with congenital and/or pre-existing heart conditions should seek expert care before and during pregnancy, as special precautions may need to be taken. Our experienced team evaluates your heart function, discusses the safety of your pregnancy with you and creates your personalized care plan.

Integrative Medicine – You will benefit from a broad selection of integrative therapies and services that offer a holistic approach to care—body, mind and spirit—to address women’s heart health.

Cardio-oncology – If you are undergoing or have undergone cancer treatment — radiation or certain chemotherapy agents — you may be at increased risk for heart disease. We collaborate with the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute
to bring together the expertise of our cardiologists and oncologists to assess your individual risk for cardiac side effects related to cancer treatment.

Our cardiologists use advanced imaging techniques, along with enhanced surveillance measures, to minimize risk. You also have the opportunity to participate in research trials to better understand the relationship between cancer treatment and heart disease.

Medical Nutrition Therapy – Our registered dietitian (RD) will review your eating habits, assess your nutritional intake, discuss your goals and develop a personalized nutrition plan. The RD will also provide nutrition education for disease prevention and counseling for heart disease, including cholesterol reduction and diabetes management.

WomenHeart Support Group – Our WomenHeart Support Network offers peer-led support groups for women living with heart disease. Currently, WomenHeart meets in four locations serving Nassau, Suffolk, Queens and Manhattan. Women who have experienced a heart attack, suffer from any cardiac condition or are at risk for heart disease are invited. To read the latest Heart to Heart Newsletter click here.
